157-Year-Old Cliff House Restaurant closes, temporarily for now, along with 368 more restaurants in SF and the Bay Area

7/30/2020

San Francisco's legendary Cliff House temporality closed operations on July 20th after a 157 year business run.  The  restaurant's iconic perch atop Ocean Beach offered takeout service to hang on, but decided that effort wasn't viable.

  • Another 368 restaurants have closed in the SF Bay Area, some temporarily including The Tadich Grill, at 171 years old, it is San Francisco's oldest restaurant, but some permanently, like Louis' Diner, proud keeper of one of the most amazing views anywhere in San Francisco!

Closed Beloved Bay Area Restaurants & Bars
  • Louis’ Diner, w/ Epic Ocean Beach Views, Shuts After 83 Years
  • Sneaky’s BBQ Shuts Down After 12 Years
  • 157-Year-Old “Cliff House” Restaurant Closes Temporarily
  • Classic 1935 SF Diner “It’s Tops” on Market Street Closes for Good
  • SF’s “Toy Boat Dessert Cafe” Being Sold After 38 Years
  • Oakland Dive Bar “Stork Club” Closes After 102 Years
  • SF’s Oldest Gay Bar “The Stud” Closes
Some closing venue highlights are:
  • It is hard loss for Toy Boat Dessert Cafe patrons who will say good bye to the much loved Clement Street cafe after its 38-year business run. Toy Boat was mainstay in the Richmond district, serving ice cream specialties along with a wealth of breakfast, lunch and all day long light meals.

  • San Francisco's funky It's Tops Diner has permanently closed its doors, and sadly, taken down its prominent neon sign.

  • Oakland's Stork Club shut its doors after an amazing 102 years. The one bright spot here is, according to Stork Club manager Tom Chittock, "The club isn't dead, but it does need to move." To that end, the club hopes to find a new space and reopen one day. To make that reopening dream closer to reality, several organizers have set up a gofundme page for the Stork Club.
.
  • A recent Yelp economic impact study from March 1 to July 10 showed that the San Francisco metro area (SF-Oak-Hayward) has seen 369 permanent restaurant closures. Among those restaurants closed forever include Velvet Cantina, It’s Tops, Nopalito (Inner Sunset), Louis’ Diner, ICHI Sushi, Locando, Toy Boat Dessert Cafe, Dobbs Ferry and many more.
